Central Carolina Technical College Receives Funding for Workforce Development Training

03/01/2021 (03/01/2021) — Sumter, SC - Central Carolina Technical College is set to receive up to $375,000 from the Governor's Emergency Education Relief (GEER) Fund that will go toward scholarships for students in short-term, non-credit workforce training programs.

The GEER Fund will allow CCTC to assist eligible students over the course of the funding period, which is set to last two years. The funds will help students receive training in high-demand work fields throughout the state.

Student expenses in non-credit/continuing education classes will be covered by the GEER Fund. These expenses include tuition, fees, textbooks, program-related assessments, required screenings and any other course-related materials. Participants must be a South Carolina resident and at least 18 years of age.

Eligible participants may use funds in training courses such as Certified Nursing Assistant, Phlebotomy Technician, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Logistics Technician and Manufacturing Technician.

"We are excited to be able to use this funding to offer scholarship programs to people who are interested in obtaining a new skill or skill upgrade," said Dean of Workforce Development and the South Carolina Environmental Training Center Elizabeth Williams. "The training associated with these scholarships is short-term and designed to provide participants with a state or national credential that will allow them to find employment quickly."

CCTC has a strong partnership with business and industry and works with employers to prepare graduates of these programs for jobs in the area. Most classes typically last no more than 16 weeks and traditionally have high job placement rates. Classes will be available in a variety of learning environments due to the pandemic.

Many South Carolinians have been impacted by the pandemic and the GEER funds will address essential training needs to help people gain the skills necessary for South Carolina's high-demand career fields. For more information on workforce training programs and GEER Fund eligibility, please contact CCTC's Workforce Development Division at 803-778-6656 or training@cctech.edu.
