Central Carolina Technical College offers support with TRIO Student Support Services
08/03/2021 (08/03/2021) — Sumter, SC - Central Carolina Technical College strives to provide its students the resources they need for academic success. One resource Central Carolina proudly offers is TRIO Student Support Services (SSS), one of eight federal TRIO programs.
This federally-funded program provides opportunities for academic development and assistance with basic college requirements while motivating students along their path to completing their post-secondary education.
"TRIO SSS solely exists to provide support to eligible students as they matriculate at Central Carolina Technical College," said Richard McDonald, assistant director of TRIO Student Support Services. "All TRIO services are free to the student and include tutoring in any academic subject. Our primary goal is to meet the needs of each student in the program."
TRIO SSS is open to enrolled students at CCTC who meet one of the following criteria: be a first-generation college student (i.e., a student whose parents have not received a bachelor's degree), be eligible for the Pell Grant or have a documented disability with the college. If they meet any of the aforementioned requirements and have completed their TRIO SSS application, they will have full access to TRIO SSS services.
TRIO SSS services include: academic tutoring, academic advising, networking opportunities, scholarship and financial aid information, economic literacy training, assistance with applications, and college tours for students who are looking to continue their postsecondary education at a four-year institution.
Central Carolina student Carlotta Pickney is grateful for the opportunities the program provides. Pickney is also a TRIO Ambassador and represents the TRIO Student Support Services program at college events throughout the year. TRIO Ambassadors undergo a competitive application process and are chosen based on factors such as participation history, GPA ranking and communication skills.
"TRIO has truly been a blessing to me with my studies," said Pickney. "All the staff, as well as the tutors, have been helpful to me. My grades would not be what they are without the support and encouragement I have received."
